Level 1: Pupil Passport and Additional needs register
A child my be added to the additional needs register if they have slightly different needs from the majority of other pupils, but don't need additional or different support to reach age-related expectations.
This might include:
- Pupils with medical needs
- Pupils with SEND that don’t require specific or additional support to reach age-related expectations
- Pupils with English as an additional language (EAL)
- Pupils from a specific vulnerable group
- Pupils who are eligible for free school meals
- Pupils with behavioural issues
- Looked-after and previously looked-after children
- Pupils who require access arrangements to sit exams
An additional needs register helps us as a school keep track of pupils in the school who have additional needs, but who don't require specific or additional support to reach age-related expectations as a result of SEND.
Example: child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
A child with ADHD is meeting age-related expectations, but often struggles to focus or becomes distracted during lessons. The teaching assistant (TA) that works in the child's class supports them with regular reminders and 1-on-1 support if they need it. The TA doesn't work specifically with this pupil, and can provide the same support to other children in the class.
This pupil wouldn't need to be added to the SEND register, because the support they receive is also offered to all children, but they would be added to the additional needs register.
The additional needs register is different to the SEND register.
