About me:

Hello, my name is Michaela Farruggia and I am the Learning Mentor at Lugwardine. I have worked at the school for a number of years in a variety of roles so have lots of experience of working with children. I am a mum to two children, both which are former Lugwardine pupils. My role is to help pupils with any difficulties they may be having. I am here to listen, offer support and practical advice and help pupils make the most of their time at Lugwardine. If you have any problems or difficulties with your child at school or at home then please contact me to arrange a meeting. My door is always open.

Aims of the Learning Mentor:

· To help pupils overcome barriers to learning

· To raise attainment, attendance and achievement

· To investigate non and poor attendance and punctuality

· To improve social skills and relationships

· To develop self confidence, motivation and self-esteem

· To provide a support network

· To help pupils recognise and reach their full potential


Ways the Learning Mentor can get involved:

· Staff can refer a pupil to the Learning Mentor

· Pupils can refer themselves to the Learning Mentor

· Parents can ask for help from the Learning Mentor


Learning Mentor approach:

· One to one individual support

· Group work in or out of class

· Liaison with staff, parents, carers and appropriate agencies

· Smooth transition from infant to junior and junior to secondary school

· Crisis intervention

· Observation

· Promote after school activities and community groups

· Regular contact with parents
